How can I get rid of garnishment order / tax levy by myself, without hiring a lawyer?

asked:

I have no money to hire a lawyer. The IRS served my bank with a garnishment order. Is there a way I can handle this myself?

Yes pay what you owe. There is NO legal means for stopping it.

what’s to handle, the IRS has informed you of the levy and unless you pay the full amount you owe IRS there is nothing to do
a lawyer cannot help you regardless of how much you pay him

The only way to make this go away would have been to file for a tax amnesty reduction or to agree to a payment schedule with the IRS. Now that they have the garnishment, there is no reason for the IRS to even talk to you. And no court is going to remove the order without good reason, which comes down to hiring a lawyer to find that reason for you.

When you wait until the guy in charge of the firing squad says fire to deal with the problem it may be too late. You can call IRS at the number on the levy and try to set up an installment agreement but you will have to prove the levy will cause a hardship–as defined by IRS–to get a release.
