Why do people like Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter say Obama’s tax policy is Socialist?

Dave asked:

They make it see like the 70% income tax rate which was on the top bracket was only that way under Jimmy Carter and Reagan “rescued America” from high taxes. The truth is that same 70% rate was used under Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon before Carter and it was in the low 90′s under Dwight Eisenhower, another Republican. JFK called for that low 90′s percentage to be dropped to 70. I realize Bill Clinton raised taxes on most people but now that Barack Obama is cutting taxes on 95% of Americans and the top bracket will still be paying 30.4% less income tax than under Nixon and Ford, why do they act like Obama is making taxes crazily high? 39.6% on the top bracket is not bad at all compared to the 70+% it was pre-Reagan. Ronald Reagan was a good president but he increased taxes on the lowest bracket from 10-15% and cut some very important programs for people with mental disabilities. Why don’t these pundits call Eisenhower, Nixon and Ford socialist? I believe it is because they want people to believe Democrats are for unheard of high taxes that will be radically different than anything even seen in this country. The myths they spew are very misleading. I believe all they truly love about America is money. In my opinion their is so much more to this country than money. Another one of their arguments is taxes go up on the top bracket then people will be less motivated to climb the social ladder. I can tell you I have no interest in being a CEO a doctor or a lawyer whether taxes are 28% like they were in the late 80′s or whether then are 90+% like they were post WW2. I work hard no matter which party is in power and I don’t complain. These people should have no credibility after the way they defended Bush the way they did when he is far more liberal than Clinton ever was fiscally. I used to be a Republican but I made the switch to Democrat because the Republicans just try to scare people into voting for them. In my opinion they are keen to ignore everything pre-carter and pretend this country began in 1976 and Reagans policies saved this country. I think a 70% income rate is far to high but 39.6 certainly isn’t and it is FAR from socialistic. The money saved by cutting those rates can empower the middle class to succeed by lowering health care costs and energy costs. Thanks for reading this far.

From,
Dave
In my sociology class I found out that wages have been stagnant since Reagan was elected. And its actually easier to move up in class in Denmark and in Canada than in the U.S. My dream is to get married and become a dad. With the cost of living so high it seems like its not nearly as easy for my generation than my parents. My mom bought a house in cash when she was 26 and she grew up lower middle class in the city. She worked hard and moved up in class. She had her college paid for because her dad died when she was 13 she received social security. People act like the government social programs are bad but it allowed my mom to go to school and earn a darn good living. Also I believe if the government were to ever spread wealth around rather than income it would be disastrous. But income is totally different. The government prints the money and writes the laws they have every right to have a progressive tax structure. If flat tax is imposed, the little man would get squeezed.

Because they know they can get their listeners riled up with buzzwords like “socialism.” Bush was a huge “socialist” (No Child Left Behind, Medicare prescription coverage, Wall Street bailout, government takeover of banks and mortgage lenders), but he was on their side, so they didn’t drag out the word then. Now they know they can score political points among people who either wear partisan blinders or pay no attention.

Just look at the right-wing responses to this question and see who’s getting the thumbs-down. To these people, Republicans could burn the Constitution and nationalize the entire economy, and GOP fans would still consider their political heroes to be freedom-loving capitalists, while Democrats are automatically “socialists,” no matter what they do. Republicans can do no wrong, and Democrats can do no right. It’s such a neat, tidy little world. Unfortunately, it’s not even close to reality.

There’s no other way to put it. They’re idiots. They’re the same ones who have supported Social Security and public schools for decades. Guess what, kids? That’s socialism. Obama didn’t invent the idea, and Republican presidents have supported socialist policies every bit as much as Democratic ones have.

Socialism: “System of social organization in which private property and the distribution of income are subject to social control; also, the political movements aimed at putting that system into practice.”

See that? The “distribution of income”. Did Obama say, or did he not say “spread the wealth around”? Spread is the same as distribute.

    That’s why.

Because Socialism has no need for credit markets, and under socialism the government does things for you rather than pumping money into business, industry and individuals to get things done.

“Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn’t it?” the blue-collar worker asked (Joe the Plumber)

After Obama responded that it would, Wurzelbacher continued: “I’ve worked hard . . . I work 10 to 12 hours a day and I’m buying this company and I’m going to continue working that way. I’m getting taxed more and more while fulfilling the American Dream.”

“It’s not that I want to punish your success,” Obama told him. “I want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they’ve got a chance for success, too.

Then, Obama explained his trickle-up theory of economics.

“My attitude is that if the economy’s good for folks from the bottom up, it’s gonna be good for everybody. I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

That’s socialism. Those who deny it are liars or living in alternate realities.

  18. WhiteHouse Watching says:

Do you understand Socialism? His policies are socialistic. Free Market is where the people take chances and risk their money to start a business and the rewards should be theirs. Soialism does not allow for the free market. i.e. Bailout. Government helped businesses but they also took some ownership of the business. When government controls business this is socialism.

Sorry did not have time to read your whole novel

One thing to consider is that before Regan we had many tax loopholes. In exchange for the lower tax rates we eliminated most of the loopholes. Now I know some of you will argue with that statement but it is true. It is my profession I am a tax strategist and I know about this stuff.

Most people don’t believe that Obama is a socialist for his tax policies but do mainly for his anti-business anti-private sector polices and statements.

That’s what you get for believing n what they tell you in your sociology class. Hopelessness and dependency. Instead go find an entrepreneur work with that person and learn that you can create any life you want for yourself. With or without the government

  21. Agent Smith says:

    Dave,

You are not factoring in the increase in unlimited social taxes.

This bumps up the rates. (Dick Morris said to about 60% and then add in State and local. This is war on small business people.)

Your so called tax cut has to be paid back next year!

The tax rate chart has not changed for Tax year 2009.

You take more home in 2009 but pay it back next year.

It’s really all lies that anyone gets a “break.”

  22. vwvw25 says:

You did not go far enough back in time–FDR started the race to raise taxes in 1933, which is why the GDP was smaller in 1937 than it was in 1928.

Also, other tax rates have continued to climb the past 70 years. State, city, county, Social Security, Medicare, Workers Comp., Unemployment, gasoline, property, auto lic. plates, Drivers lic fees, School funding taxes, double taxation of dividends…Most Americans are already paying 45-55% in taxes so any increase at the Federal level just increases the pain and enhances the decline in economies.

  23. lawgirl says:

Because they do not know what it is, nor do many people who answered. Socialism is not another word for redistribution of wealth, nor does it involve taking money from on person and giving it to another. Do people just make this stuff up?

The redistribution part comes into play because with true socialism, the idea is that the people who contribute all get a part of the profit, as opposed to an owner receiving all of the profits, and the workers getting a salary. This will never happen in the US.

  24. sean e says:

Because his polices are socialist in nature, that is a fact.

America has been socialist since FDR, that is also a fact.

Kennedy, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, Bush 1 & 2 were all presided over socialist nations, the US is socialist because we want to keep what we Earn and what other people earn also.
We are a nation of greedy baby killing pis-ants and those that do not deserve to be free but are slaves in heart will in time be slaves in deed.
You reep what you sow, there is no getting around it!

  25. . . says:

Easy. Socialists say they are and we believe them.

“They’ve been higher” isn’t even close to a valid argument in claiming “Obama’s tax policy isn’t Socialist.”

“Someone failed to call them that at some point in the past” is equally bogus.

Incidentally, Obama’s spending WILL require either a 100% rate for EVERYONE or hyper inflating us all into such depths of poverty that it’s literally life-threatening for the average American.
There is NO third alternative (well- there’s NOT doing Obama policy) and Obama SAID he knows that.

Oh, over the years, numerous Democrats have been on TV and radio giving their opinions on taxes – if you “think a 70% income rate is far to high” then according to 100% of the Democrat Congressional Caucus you are a right-wing extremist.

  26. Greg Reich says:

    1. They don’t know what “socialism” actually means. It means: a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

In other words, the people control the means of production. There is no more capitalism; the people with money do not control the means of production. I’m not sure where in Obama’s policy they’re seeing capitalism abolished.

    2. They have done their market research, and “socialism” is a word that instills fear and ire in their target audience, making it more likely that they will oppose Obama’s policies.

    3. They have no actual plans of their own. They’d rather continue the policies of the past eight years. After all, look at what they earned. Rush has a $400,000,000 contract to continue doing his radio show. Hannity has $100,000,000 in contracts. Who knows how much Coulter made off of her hideous books, but any profit was too much.

    4. All three of these people–and many others like them–believe that greed is good (and they also believe in Jesus–weird, right?), and that rich people somehow earned every penny they made entirely on their own. Any person with employees can’t make this claim, but they will.

    5. All of them believe in privatization, and anything that isn’t 100 percent privatization is socialism to them. If you don’t own it, you have no right to it; there is no commons, as far as they’re concerned.

  27. okies66 says:

  28. Bob H says:

Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda, Josef Goebbels, found that politicians were seldom believed, but celebrities were almost always believed no matter how ridiculous. So he made cheap radios available, for celebrities to spread the party line. The repubs have it easier, they just bought FOX5. The babblers came with it. But like everything else the GOP has imitated, it’s right out of the Nazi playbook. Nothing to do with taxes.

Just blow hard, gas bag, two-bit lawyers who wanted to pontify and strut around in the Capitol. Pitiful collection we must watch on TV and making everybody sick. Narcissistic pukes who truly do not understand the intricasies and details of the situation. That is why we are in this damn mess. They think they can give stirring speeches and make it better. They don’t have a clue. We need profecient, detail minded, smart people who are willing to work around the clock as if it was The Battle of Buldge or taking Iwo Jima. These slow witted, chubby gas bags will finish off he nation and never know the difference. They are like that emporer with the new clothes. Well, face it, they are naked and have no idea. I can see them for what they are, naked and in utter denial.

I have a small company but I’m just below the 250 K income level that’s been talked about so-much. I have been working in my industry for for the past 26 years. I will not be contributing to the charities as I have in the past , I will not be hiring or increasing my pay roll this year ( or for the near future for that matter ) In conclusion I’m thinking about shutting down the company if I lose many of the tax deductions that I currently take. I have been working 14 to16 hour days /6 days a week for as long as I can remember. I’m sure I could get work that I can live on and not be busting my tail for ! I don’t know where you got you tax history from but I think that your info is very wrong . I love this country! but if this socialism crap keeps up I’ll be shutting down . SO I do disagree with you . I for one will be less motivated to “climb the social ladder”
